As more police departments abandon chemically processed film in favor of digital photography, the technology could be confounding for the justice system. Film images are subject to darkroom tricks, but because digital pictures are merely bits of data, manipulating them is much easier. And although willful evidence manipulation is rare, forensic specialists acknowledge that a poorly trained examiner incorrectly using computer enhancement programs can unwittingly introduce errors.

"What you can do in a darkroom is 2 percent of what Photoshop is capable of doing," said Larry Meyer, former head of photography for an insurance company. "There have been relatively few challenges to the use of digital technology as evidence and in most of them the courts have looked at them in a fairly superficial way," said Edwin Imwinkelried, an evidence expert at the University of California law school.

Concerns about the impeachability of digital photographs are one reason many police departments have been hesitant to ditch film for crime scene photographs and forensic analysis. In fact, some people who train law enforcement agencies in photography estimate that only 25 to 30 percent of U.S. police departments have gone digital — despite the cost benefits of no longer having to buy film and the ease with which digital pictures can be captured and disseminated. The police department in Santa Clara, Calif., bought 30 digital cameras recently but is holding off on giving them to detectives and technicians until the department specifies ways to lock away the original photos as evidence "so there can be no question that anything was changed," said Sharon Hoehn, an analyst for the department.

Law enforcement officials also worry about the limitations that still plague digital photography. Digital pictures can't be blown up as clearly for courtroom displays as well as film photos. Or the compression needed to store a digital file on disk can make the image blurry or blocky, potentially obscuring key details.

"Digital imaging for the most part has a long way to go to meet the quality of film," said Richard Vorder-Bruegge, an FBI forensic expert who chaired a panel that wrote guidelines for law enforcement use of digital imaging. For example, he said, a negative shot on traditional 200-speed film can produce the equivalent of 18 megapixels of resolution. Only highly specialized, expensive digital cameras approach that now; most that consumers buy are less than 5 megapixels. Vorder-Bruegge believes cops should stay with film for capturing close-up details of footprints and tire tracks.

De Amsterdamse politie mist duizenden foto's van verdachten omdat die na het ontwikkelen mislukt blijken te zijn. Hierdoor wordt de opsporing van criminelen zwaar tegengewerkt.

Vorig jaar mislukte een derde van de 5500 foto's die werden genomen van overvallers, straatrovers, inbrekers, zakkenrollers, hooligans, winkeldieven en andere verdachten. Omdat er vaak lange tijd overheen gaat voordat de gemaakte foto's bij de fotoafdeling worden aangeboden, zijn de verdachten in veel gevallen alweer op vrije voeten, waardoor de kans op het maken van een nieuwe foto verkeken is. Daardoor telt de databank met foto's van verdachte personen op dit moment slechts 17.000 opnamen, terwijl dat er 25.000 hadden kunnen zijn.

In 2000 maakte de Amsterdamse politie 6082 foto's van verdachte personen die op het bureau werden vastgehouden. Daarvan mislukte 29,3%. In 2001 en 2002 daalde het aantal mislukte opnamen naar respectievelijk 24,3 en 16,1%. Alles wees er dus op dat het beter ging, tot de dramatische cijfers van 2003 bekend werden gemaakt en maar liefst 32,2 % van de opnamen onbruikbaar bleek. Voorheen was er een speciale fotodienst die verdachten fotografeerde, maar tegenwoordig gebeurt dat door de wijkteams zelf.

When news of Helmut Newton's death reached the ears of those involved in his latest advertising shoot, most people thought the production would be canceled. But much to their surprise, calls came in that very night saying the shoot was on.

Newton's wife, June Newton, who shoots under the name Alice Springs, agreed within hours of her husband's death to finish the job. Springs shot for four days last week in Los Angeles, executing Newton's original concept, which showcases strong women in traditionally male-dominated roles.

In an apparent reaction against the latest digital camera gear, magazine photojournalists are turning away from technology and getting back to the basics.

"So many of these photographers are getting these canned (digital) images," says photographer Jeff Jacobson, who covers the campaign for Time magazine. "They shoot like crazy for ten minutes, get their shot and then they leave. Meanwhile, the event is still going on and stuff is happening. I just think it's way too quick to make judgements about pictures just minutes after shooting them. It leads to a standardization of pictures, and you really stop looking and seeing and go for the obvious thing."

Fotografe Lee Miller (1907-1977) begon als fotomodel. In 1929 trok ze naar Parijs om er te poseren voor Man Ray, die haar de kunst van het fotograferen bijbracht. De Photographers Association of the Netherlands (PANL) nodigt jaarlijks in Nederland wonende professionele fotografen en fotografiestudenten uit om hun beste foto's in te zenden.

De ingezonden foto's voor de Photography Award of the Netherlands #13 waren van 21 t/m 28 november 2003 in Amsterdam te bezichtigen en toonden werk van 150 fotografen met in totaal meer dan 680 beelden. Vanaf vrijdag 13 februari is in de Melkweg Galerie (ook in Amsterdam) een selectie van de winnende foto's te zien.

Fujifilm challenges industry speculation on future of film cameras

Fujifilm is defying current trends in the photography industry by announcing significant investment in film camera technology in 2004, and by adding a raft of new models to its compact film camera range - both APS and 35mm.

Fujifilm is continuing to support the industry with the introduction of both film and digital products, with developments in film, compact cameras and single use cameras projected throughout 2004 and beyond.

There are several reasons why film remains the preferable medium for many photographers, including familiarity with the format, camera ease of use and lower costs. Fujifilm believes that consumers should have the choice of either 35mm film, APS film or digital photography available to them. Although digital cameras are now very much accessible due to lower prices and the growth in high street digital printing, the company feels that customers should have the opportunity to purchase film products if that's what they prefer.

Adrian Clarke, Fujifilm's UK Director of Consumer Products, commented, "Film is very much alive! Fujifilm is continuously confronting rumours in the industry that the film camera market is in decline, and is fully committed to developing exciting new technologies in the field of film photography. Although prices of film cameras are being forced down with the enormous interest in digital cameras, penetration of digital is nowhere near as high as that of film cameras.

"What's more, there is still a healthy market for products that are simple to operate, low in price and produce fantastic photos developed in a familiar way - many people don't feel inclined to change from what they are used to."

Fujifilm emphasises that film cameras offer extremely high value for money. For example, if you compare a digital camera to a film camera with equivalent features, you would pay approximately half the price for the film model. Furthermore, many professional and enthusiast photographers remain convinced that film is still a higher quality medium.

Facts to know about the UK film market:

-In the UK, almost two million film cameras have been purchased during the last 12 months.
-While digital processing is becoming more prevalent, film still dominates in the area of photographic processing services.

Het FotoMuseum van Antwerpen is vernieuwd en opent op 21 maart feestelijk de deuren voor het grote publiek. De oppervlakte van het museum aan de Waalse Kaai is verdubbeld van 5.000 naar bijna 10.000 vierkante meter. Men rekent op 75.000 bezoekers per jaar.

De renovatie van het FotoMuseum nam drie jaar in beslag, in plaats van de geplande anderhalf jaar. Daarbij werd ook het budget flink overschreden. Aan het project hangt een prijskaartje van 7,5 miljoen euro, terwijl het op 4 miljoen euro was begroot. De vertraging is volgens Christoph Ruys, de directeur-conservator van het FotoMuseum, te wijten aan de onteigeningsprocedure van enkele gebouwen aan de achterkant van het museum, en aan het faillissement van een van de onderaannemers.

In het vernieuwde FotoMuseum is ook plaats voor het FilmMuseum. Er zijn twee cinemazalen met een capaciteit van 85 en 150 bezoekers. "Er komen meer toegankelijke tentoonstellingen over pers-, mode-, sport- en industriële fotografie", zegt Geudens. Hij belooft voor 21 maart alvast een feestelijke opening.

Vrolijkmakend zijn ze niet, de foto’s van Nairobi’s grootste sloppenwijk aan de wanden van de bibliotheek op de Oudegracht in Utrecht. De maker, Julius Mwelu, is 19 jaar en hoopt met een loopbaan als fotograaf het bikkelharde leven in het getto van Mathare achter zich te laten. Daar leven een half miljoen straatarme mensen, dicht opeengepakt in krotten, zonder water en elektriciteit en straten als open riolen. De bevolking, van jong tot oud, vlucht in alcohol en drugs. Criminaliteit behoort tot het dagelijks leven.

Julius bracht het uitzichtloze bestaan in de onmetelijke krottenwijk figuurlijk gesproken vlijmscherp in beeld. Hij ving lijmsnuivende kinderen voor de lens, fotografeerde illegale drankstokerijen en toont rauwe beelden van laveloze mannen in stegen. Hoopgevend zijn de foto’s van vrolijk spelende kinderen bij een rivier aan de rand van de wijk.

In een verklarende tekst bij de expositie benadrukt Julius dat hij niet alleen de ellende wil laten zien, maar dat ondanks alles ook schoonheid en trots in zijn foto’s doorklinken. De tentoonstelling ‘Julius, foto’s uit zijn sloppenwijken’ is nog tot en met 27 februari te zien in de bibliotheek aan de Oudegracht 167 in Utrecht.

Zelfmoordterroristen blijken in toenemende mate fotografenjacks, -hesjes en -vesten te gebruiken om hun explosieven onopvallend mee te dragen. Zo werden ook bij de aanslagen zondag in Koerdistan deze vesten gebruikt.

Een reden te meer om deze kledingstukken niet te gebruiken. Voor je het weet word je door een onrustige militair, lijfwacht of bewaker van kwade bedoelingen verdacht en kan je het wellicht niet navertellen.

De volgende editie van Noorderlicht opent op 4 september dit jaar en vindt plaats in Leeuwarden. In 2004 zal fotografie uit de Arabische wereld centraal staan.

In het Fries Museum wordt een tentoonstelling gepresenteerd van hedendaagse Arabische fotografen die in hun regio werken. Op andere locaties zal werk te zien zijn van westerse fotografen die zich in de regio verdiept hebben.

Voor het blad OnzeWereld maakten vijftien fotografen een reportage over moeders en het moederschap in veertien verschillende landen. De foto's die gemaakt werden voor dit internationale project zijn tot en met 18 februari te zien in de Noorderlicht Fotogalerie. De tentoonstelling bevat onder meer beelden van in de prostitutie zwanger geraakte tieners in Sint Petersburg (Geert van Kesteren), de eunuchen van Bangladesh (Akash) en foto's uit Iran van Newsha Tavakolian.

De New York Times publiceert vandaag een terugblik op het werk van Helmut Newton, die tien dagen geleden overleed: Helmut Newton and the Invincible Woman.

Weekblad Nieuwe Revu gaat vanaf deze week dynamischer en eigentijdser door het leven. De bestaande vormgeving, die al sinds 1999 dienst doet, is vervangen door een nieuwe. Volgens hoofdredacteur J. van der Bijl was het tijd voor iets anders, zo zei ze maandag.

Nieuwe Revu nieuwe stijl kenmerkt zich door een ,,kaal kleurgebruik en een meer betrokken vorm van fotografie''. De kleuren op de pagina's zijn weggehaald en behalve de foto's zijn de pagina's zwart-wit, en is er sprake van een rode steunkleur.

In Amsterdam is de jurering van de jaarlijkse World Press Photo wedstrijd begonnen. De winnaars zullen op vrijdag 13 februari worden bekendgemaakt. Dit jaar zijn Gary Knight en Reza de bekendste onder de juryleden.

De tentoonstelling van de winnende foto's opent op 26 april in de Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.

Deze week staan Gert Verhulst (Samson & Gert) en Karen (K3) in Privé, dat stiekem een fotograaf achter hen aanstuurde toen zij van een dure zonvakantie in Dubai genoten. "Mooie beelden toch? Het koppeltje, kussend in het zwembad, stoeiend aan de rand. Het heeft iets," aldus Privé-hoofdredacteur Evert Santegoeds die het begeleidende artikel schreef.

Het productiebedrijf van Verhulst kan er minder om lachen en dient een klacht in, namens Verhulst die niet wil uitkomen voor zijn relatie met Karen. Santegoeds is niet onder de indruk: "Ik beloof dat ik hem op de stapel zal leggen. Geen rechter in Nederland die maalt om zoiets."

De leiding van het Amerikaanse dagblad The New York Times heeft vrijdag uitdrukkelijk gesteld dat zijn oorlogscorrespondenten geen wapens mogen dragen.

Het verbod volgt op een discussie op de redactie van de krant over welke voorzorgsmaatregelen correspondenten en fotografen moeten nemen indien ze in Irak werken. Een woordvoerster van het blad beklemtoonde dat de medewerkers in Irak kogelvrije vesten krijgen en voorts worden getraind voor hun gevaarlijke missie.
